Obtaining a customer's authorization for diagnostic inspection

In the event that a customer requests a diagnostic inspection of their vehicle to determine if damage is present and claim related, authorization to perform the inspection, commonly referred to as Owner to authorize, is required.

When this applies

When a diagnostic inspection is requested to establish whether damage is present and related to the claimed loss. The repair facility representative must obtain a customers authorization to perform a diagnostic inspection of their vehicle.

This may include
  • disassembly of mechanical components for inspection
  • diagnosis of electrical systems, or
  • additional teardown.

Process

  1. ICBC estimator or repair facility representative
    1. Explains the process of disassembly and mechanical inspection to the customer.
  2. Customer
    1. Selects a repair facility of their choice.
    2. Authorizes any disassembly for inspection or diagnostics at that facility.
  3. Repair facility representative
    1. Performs the inspection and advises the ICBC estimator of outcome of inspection.
  4. ICBC estimator
    1. Receives details of inspection from the repair facility representative, and makes a decision based on the information provided.

    related to the claim repair facility representative or ICBC estimator contacts the customer, advising them that ICBC is assuming the cost of repairs, less applicable depreciation and deductible.

    ICBC estimator contacts the customer, advising them that they are responsible for
    • assuming inspection costs, and
    • arranging for repairs with the facility of their choice at their own discretion.
