Transferring repair estimates for vehicles sold privately policy

Claims may only be made by the insured named in the policy in effect at the time of loss. Generally, repair estimates are not transferable. This applies to vehicles, involved in claims, that are either sold privately or through an auction house.

Restrictions

Restriction Detail
Work completion Vehicles sold privately or through an auction house, must have all claims initiated, and work completed, prior to the sale.
Transfer of ownership No Estimate or Appraisal is honoured once vehicle ownership has been transferred.
Owner presenting a claim A new owner cannot present a claim on behalf of the previous owner.

Exceptions

ICBC does accept the Estimate or Appraisal presented by

  • the surviving spouse of the deceased registered owner
  • the executor/executrix of an estate
  • a lessee who is buying out their vehicle lease, or
  • the new registered owner, if that person is a member of the same household as the owner named on the Estimate or Appraisal.
Note: The new registered owner, within the same household, must start repairs within seven (7) days from the date of transfer of ownership, as indicated on the Transfer/Tax Form (APV9T) form.
Important: For claims that warrant an exception, refer to the Claims Coverage Committee
