Handle inaccessible battery

Steps to handle inaccessible battery in a vehicle.

When this applies

When access to a battery compartment or the vehicle’s electrical system is not possible, precautions must be taken to reduce the fire hazard.

You are unable to open hood or trunk to gain access to the battery due to severity of the damage.

Warning: Do not attempt to cut any battery cables.

Procedure

  1. Make all attempts to ensure that the damaged vehicle is not kept overnight inside a claims servicing office.

If the vehicle must be stored inside overnight

    • have the Estimating Services Manager or designate visually inspect the vehicle to ensure it does not pose a fire risk, and
    • make a note in the claim file.
Important: If the Estimating Services Manager determines the vehicle could pose a risk, it must be removed from the building.
  2. Use a yellow oil marker to mark the vehicle NO B/D to indicate that the battery has not been disconnected.

If the front windshield of the vehicle...

    Then...

    is intact

    mark the windshield.

    is smashed

mark the driver’s side of the vehicle.

  3. Update ClaimCenter with a note:
    • State battery is not disconnected on the subject line, and
    • explain briefly the reason(s) why.

Post requisite

When a vehicle is towed to an ICBC salvage facility, it must be stored in a designated area with additional fire suppression equipment.
