Towing vehicle requirements

Summary of requirements a towing vehicle owned by a tow company must have to qualify as an ICBC supplier vehicle.

Requirements

A tow company must meet and maintain specific requirements, regarding their towing vehicles, to be a qualified ICBC tow supplier.

Note: Failure to meet or maintain the requirements may result in termination of the supplier account.

Registration

be registered as a:

  • tow car
  • tow truck
  • wrecker
  • flat deck truck
  • service vehicle, or
  • recovery vehicle regardless of size.

Rate class and policy

be registered in the appropriate rate class and have the applicable ICBC Garage Automobile Policy.

Vehicle licence and decals

have a valid:

  • motor vehicle licence to operate in B.C.
  • vehicle for hire plate, where applicable, and
  • municipal plate or decal, where applicable.

Safety Inspection Certificate

display a current Motor Vehicle Safety Inspection Certificate for vehicles with a licence Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) greater than 8200 kilograms.

vehicle identification

permanently and clearly display on both sides of the vehicle:

  • company name
  • telephone number, and
  • unit number.
Note: The ICBC supplier name must be the dominant name displayed.

towing equipment

be equipped with:

  • dual rear wheels (with the exception of service vehicles), and
  • an operational under-lift or wheel-lift.
Note: A slide deck is an acceptable alternative to use.

Class IV requirement

have a minimum class IV chassis or higher weight capacity towing and recovery vehicle in their fleet, that is equipped with:
  • dual rear wheels
  • a hydraulic underlift or wheel lift, and
  • a hydraulic extendable boom.

  • Dodge 4500
  • Ford F450
