Estimate a propane or natural gas fueled vehicle

Steps to estimate a propane or natural gas fuelled vehicle.

When this applies

Vehicle fuelled by liquid propane gas (LPG) or compressed natural gas (CNG) pose potential fire or explosion hazards when damaged.

Estimate all LPG or CNG vehicles, driveable or non-driveable, on a priority basis.

Procedure

  1. Visually check for LPG or CNG vehicles if not identified on the Estimate or Appraisal.
  2. Determine whether the vehicle is driveable.
If the vehicle is ... Then ...
    driveable proceed to step 7.
not driveable proceed to step 3
  3. Place red cone on roof of vehicle.
Note: This identifies the vehicle as fueled by LPG or CNG.
Exception: If this is a mobile estimate, this is not necessary.
  4. Disconnect battery cables.

If you need to cut battery cables to do so, include their replacement on the Estimate or Appraisal.

  5. Close all cylinder shut-off valves.

    Include any that are

    • enclosed in a sealed cover or bag, and
    • vented outside the vehicle.
  6. Ensure ignition is in off position.
Note: This ensures the solenoid valve remains closed.
  7. Estimate the vehicle using standard estimating procedures.
  8. Complete a Request Tow Activity as follows:
If, by closing time, the estimate is ... And the vehicle is ... Then have the tow company ...
