Manage an Ignition Interlock device

How an estimator or Collision Repair Program participant handles a vehicle where an ignition interlock device was present, and may have been damaged in the motor vehicle crash.

Prerequisites

A vehicle involved in the crash, has an ignition interlock device.

When this applies

The claim owner or exposure owner has reviewed the claim, and determined there may be coverage for the repair of the ignition interlock device, if it was damaged.

Procedure

  1. Receive the appropriate EST activity for the non-drive vehicle.
  2. Determine how the ignition interlock device will be handled.
    • If the ignition interlock device handset or interface module is ... And the customer is ... Then ...
      undamaged
      • responsible, or
      • not responsible
      document any vehicle damage on the Claim Estimate (CL14) only.
      damaged as a result of the crash not responsible add instructions on the Claim Estimate (CL14) to contact Smart Start Canada to arrange for the repair or replacement of the interface and headset.
      damaged as a result of the crash
      • responsible, or
      • partially responsible
      • direct the customer to contact Smart Start Canada regarding repairs and repair costs, and
      • provide the Smart Canada phone number 1-844-432-4776.
      Note: When Smart Start Canada charges for their work, the repair facility shows the invoice as a sublet on the Claim Estimate (CL14).
    • If the ignition interlock device handset or interface module is ... And the customer is ... Then ...
      • damaged or undamaged, and
      • present in a vehicle that is a total loss
      responsible
      • explain that the vehicle's total loss value does not include compensation for an ignition interlock device
      • direct the customer to contact Smart Start Canada to arrange the removal of the ignition interlock device
      • provide the Smart Start Canada phone number 1-844-432-4776, or
      • list of ignition interlock vendors in British Columbia.
        Note: If the customer is responsible for the crash, the replacement cost of an ignition interlock device is not an insurable loss.
      • damaged or undamaged, and
      • present in a vehicle that is a total loss
      not responsible
      • explain that the vehicle's total loss value does not include compensation for an ignition interlock device
      • direct the customer to contact Smart Start Canada to arrange the removal of the ignition interlock device
      • provide the Smart Start Canada phone number 1-844-432-4776, or
      • list of ignition interlock vendors in British Columbia.
        Note: If the customer is not responsible for the crash, the customer may submit the replacement cost of an ignition interlock device to the claim owner or exposure owner for consideration.
