Handle an uninsured motorist vehicle damage Enhanced Care claim

The claim handler determines if coverage is available for an uninsured motorist who was involved in a crash with an ICBC insured motorist, for claims with a date of loss (DOL) on May 1, 2021, or later.

When this applies

The uninsured motorist reports they have vehicle damage caused by a crash with an ICBC insured motorist.
An uninsured claimant who is 0% responsible for a crash may have access to Third Party Liability coverage from section 20 of the Insurance (Vehicle) Act when
  • the uninsured vehicle was parked off-highway, and
  • the third party vehicle left a highway and struck the off-highway vehicle.

Procedure

  1. Assess responsibility, if this is not already resolved.
    If the uninsured motorist is ... Then ...
    less than 100 percent responsible proceed to step 2.
    100 percent responsible
    • inform the uninsured motorist that there is no coverage for vehicle damage, and
    • close the
      • Towing - No Own Damage exposure, if applicable, and
      • claim, if it is not assigned to a support and recovery specialist.
  2. Determine if any coverage is available to the uninsured motorist.
    If the uninsured vehicle was ... Then ...
    on-highway
    • inform the uninsured motorist that there is no coverage for vehicle damage, and
    • close the
      • Towing - No Own Damage exposure, and
      • claim, if it is not assigned to a support and recovery specialist.
    off-highway
    • open the Towing - No Own Damage exposure, and
    • set the reserves.
    Note: The portion of the vehicle repair or replacement that the customer is not responsible for is paid against the Towing - No Own Damage exposure and then transferred to the responsible motorist's Third Party Liability exposure by Financial Distribution.
