Determine damage is consistent with cause of loss other than hit and run

When an estimator confirms damage is inconsistent with a hit and run, the handling claims representative reviews the estimate with the estimator, questions the customer and determines applicable coverage.

Prerequisites

  • The estimator determines the damages are consistent with a cause of loss other than a hit and run, and
  • The customer has available coverage but not under hit and run.

When this applies

The customer meets with an estimator to review damage that is inconsistent with a hit and run.

Procedure

  1. Review the estimate and images with the estimator.
  2. Contact the customer.
    1. Explain why the damage is not consistent with a vehicle-to-vehicle collision.
    2. Ask the customer if
      • anybody else has access to the vehicle, and
      • they had been operating the vehicle when the damage occurred.
      If the ... Then ...
      customer maintains it is a hit and run claim
      • send Statutory Declaration (CL45) to the customer for completion
      • note the claim file, and
      • await the return of the notarized CL45.
      customer accepts our assessment of cause of loss other than hit and run
      • proceed to step 2.
  3. Determine applicable coverage.
    If the coverage is ... Then ...
    Comprehensive
    • change the cause of loss
    • update reserves
    • confirm applicable deductible
    • remove hold, and
    • advise the estimator of the applicable cause of loss and to remove hold in WorkCenter.
    Collision
    • advise the customer this may have potential premium impacts
    • change the cause of loss
    • update reserves
    • confirm applicable deductible
    • remove hold, and
    • advise the estimator of the applicable cause of loss and to approve estimate in WorkCenter.
    Note: The customer may elect not to pursue the claim because of the potential impacts to their premium.
