Vehicle Identification Number
Definition of vehicle identification number (VIN) and VIN Search.
Definition
A VIN, also known as a serial number, is a series of seventeen letters and numbers that a vehicle’s primary manufacturer assigns to each vehicle. In 1981, most vehicle manufacturers adopted this seventeen-digit standard. Since that time, no two vehicles have been assigned the same VIN.
Note: Alpha characters I, O and Q are not used in a VIN.
VIN Search system
VIN Search is a system that
- can be used when a customer provides a VIN number instead of a plate number
- locates a vehicle registration number through a whole or partial VIN number (last six digits), and
- can be accessed by all staff at the Claims Contact Centre (CCC).
