A list of circumstances for when a vehicle is placed on hold or not on hold in a storage facility, such as a yard or building.

This table presents circumstances for when a vehicle is on hold or is not on hold in a storage facility.

If the vehicle is… Then ICBC…
not on hold
  • dispatches a tow
  • requests photos, or
  • requests an invoice.
  • on hold due to a claim investigation, and
  • subject to services requested by ICBC
  • dispatches a tow
  • requests photos, or
  • requests an invoice
Important: ICBC pays the initial towing and storage costs as part of the claim investigation up to the CL555 and CL555A being sent to the vehicle owner and tow company.
  • on hold due to a police investigation, and
  • subject to services requested by ICBC, after the police hold is removed
  • pays for storage days:
    • while the claim is still being investigated by the claims handler
    • from the date the police hold is removed
    • up to and including the date the vehicle is dispatched for towing, or
    • when an invoice was requested
  • does not pay for storage days starting from the date the vehicle was placed on hold by the police.

Important: If the claim investigation concludes before the police hold is removed, send the CL555 and the CL555A to the vehicle owner and tow company informing them of the decision.
  • under a vehicle impound order hold, and
  • services requested by ICBC
is advised by the tow company
  • when the total amount for the impound order has been paid by the vehicle owner
  • when the vehicle can be released, and
  • to arrange the tow directly to the destination indicated on the CL602 form.
Note: When additional towing and storage costs are submitted to ICBC by the customer, the claim owner reviews and determines whether to pay as a claims expense.
