Handle vehicle damage incurred at tow storage facility

Steps to handle additional vehicle damage that has occurred to a vehicle while situated at the towing suppliers’ storage facility (yard and/or building).

When this applies

Tow suppliers must ensure that vehicles in their care and custody are safe and secured while in their possession.

The costs for necessary bulk materials (plastic, tape, or tarps) that are used to protect a vehicle from additional damage, such as the weather, are included in the applicable daily storage rate.

Tarps used to cover a burnt vehicle, or when requested by ICBC to be left with the vehicle can be invoiced to ICBC as follows:

  • as a consumable at cost plus the applicable mark-up, and
  • with a written explanation and/or photographs.

Procedure

  1. Tow supplier
    1. Advise ICBC Manager Estimating Services or designate immediately when it is discovered that additional damage has occurred to the vehicle while in their storage facility (yard and/or building).
  2. Manager, Estimating Services or designate.
    1. Determine whether the following happened:
      • the damage was unavoidable, and
there was reasonable care of the vehicle taken by the tow supplier.
    2. Determine whether the new damage will be:
      • included in the claim costs, or
      responsibility of the tow supplier.
    3. Determine negligence.
If the tow supplier is… Then…
negligent tow supplier reports to ICBC with their ICBC Garage policy for coverage consideration under Section 3, Customer’s Vehicle.
not negligent additional claims costs are included in the initial ICBC claim.
    4. Create a note for the claim file.
Note: Tow suppliers may request for a vehicle to be stored indoors due to the claims-related damage, or the uniqueness of the vehicle model type. The request must be pre-approved by ICBC and invoiced at the indoor storage rates.
