Prepare raw plastic parts

Definition of Mitchell Estimating (ME) additional operation preparation (prep) raw plastic parts.

Definition

The preparation of a raw plastic part is an additional operation in the ME system. Estimators select this additional operation when they use the

Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), or
after-market plastic parts (i.e. polypropylene), supplied in a raw, unfinished state with no primer on them.

These types of plastic parts

have a shiny appearance and slippery feel, and
are typically larger parts, such as
- bumpers
- large cladding, or
- wheel opening flares.

Note: Prep raw plastic parts are not permitted on other plastic substrates.

Preparation of raw substrate

Preparation of plastic components coming from a manufacturer or supplier in a raw/unprimed state must be allowed .2 per refinish hour (20%).

This time should be entered on the Raw Substrate Prep line in Mitchell Cloud Estimating (MCE), including the following preparation operations

detergent wash
alcohol/plastic cleaner wash
additional solvent wash
application of specialized adhesion promoter, and
the cleaning of equipment

Restrictions

This additional operation should not be used when the

plastic does not share similar characteristics to (i.e. polypropylene)
part is being repaired or supplied as an exchange part, or
new OEM or after-market part is already primed and/or painted.

Base refinish labour time application

The application of 20% of the base refinish labour paint time to the part with a minimum time of 0.3 hours.

Note: Exchange part suppliers are responsible to ensure that the primer on the bumper covers meets industry standards as per the Exchange Standards of Performance.
