Definitions of airport taxi and user fee transponders.

Definition

Transponders are used to automatically capture and validate fees in various situations. When a windshield needs replacing and the transponder is permanently attached, the transponder must also be replaced.

Airport taxi transponders

Taxis that are qualified to service the Vancouver airport (YVR) are equipped with a dedicated transponder that is permanently mounted on the inside of the windshield.

User fee transponders

The United States Customs and Border Protection issues transponders automatically validate user fees. Transponders can be affixed to the inside lower left of the truck’s windshield using

  • tape
  • a clear plastic pouch, or
  • the transponder’s adhesive coating.

When the transponder has been permanently attached using the adhesive coating, it is not removable.

The transponder must be replaced when it is

  • non-operational
  • damaged
  • lost, or
  • permanently attached to a windshield that needs replacement.
