Total loss

Definition of a total loss.

Definition

A vehicle is considered a total loss when

  • the repair costs exceed it's actual cash value (ACV)
  • the vehicle is not economical to repair, usually due to costs other than repair costs, or
  • the damages exceed a contractual threshold, such as the amount specified in the New Vehicle Replacement Plus (NVR+).

ICBC follows the above definition as it is outlined by the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators (CCMTA).
