Determine if vehicle is repairable

The estimator determines if a vehicle is repairable or a total loss.

When this applies

When the cost of the repairs is close to the total maximum repair amount, calculated as actual cash value (ACV) less salvage value, the estimator must compare the two amounts to determine if the vehicle is repairable or a total loss.

The maximum repair is calculated before determining the repairability of the vehicle.

Process

  1. Estimator
    1. Deducts the potential salvage value from the vehicle's ACV to determine the maximum repair amount.
When the total repair is ... Then ...
less than the maximum repair amount
      • approves the repairs, and
      • informs the repair facility to proceed with repairs.
more than or equal to the maximum repair amount
      • requests supplement from the collision repair facility to remove repair estimate lines, and
      • processes the vehicle as a total loss.
50% or more of the ACV, and the customer has a New Vehicle Replacement Plus (NVR+) endorsement policy on the vehicle
    2. Completes the repair or total loss.
When the vehicle has been determined to be ... Then ...
repairable creates a Journal note, including the maximum repair amount along with calculations.
      a total loss
      • selects Convert to total loss in Mitchell Cloud Estimating (MCE)
      • contacts the customer, explaining the total loss process
      • create a note in ClaimCenter, and
      • proceeds to stage 3.
    3. Determines whether a tear-down is performed.
      When ... Then ...
yes, consider a full or partial re-assembly to increase salvage value
      • requests that the participant supplement the repair estimate to add tear-down entries
      • erases all repair estimate lines
      • adds tear-down labour time and other applicable operations, if required, and
      • reviews and approves the tear-down repair estimate.
Example: For 3.0 hours, select MCE Pre-store line TEARDOWN TO DETERMINE T/L.
      no proceeds to stage 3.
  2. Collision repair facility
    1. Erases all repair estimate lines.
    2. Adds tear-down labour time by selecting Mitchell Estimating (MCE) Pre-store line TEARDOWN TO DETERMINE T/L with applicable labour hours.
    3. Adds other applicable operations, if required.
    4. Submits the repair estimate to ICBC.
  3. Estimator
    1. Updates ClaimCenter to initiate the Total Loss process
    2. Completes aRepair Facility Support Request form - Towing request,
Note: If the collision repair facility is not prepared to have the vehicle towed they can submit the Repair Facility Support Request form - Towing request at a later time.
Tip: A collision repair program participant can access the Repair Facility Support Request form through Make a support request (partners.icbc.com).

Results

A claims support assistant (CSA) retrieves the activity and arranges a tow for the vehicle.
