Mileage and insurance on loss of use rental vehicles

A list of mileage and insurance limits.

Mileage

Certain mileage and insurance limits apply to loss of use rental vehicles. Mileage varies according to whether the vehicle is a business or passenger vehicle.

Generally, limited mileage is included in the daily rental fee:

Vehicle/policy

Detail

Business vehicle

Paying an additional $5 to $10 per day for unlimited mileage (where available) is likely cheaper than paying per kilometer.

Passenger vehicle

  • Mileage is paid on an exception basis only (for example, the customer lives in Chilliwack and works in Vancouver)
  • In most cases, unlimited mileage is cheaper than per kilometer.

RoadStar/Roadside Plus

ICBC pays all mileage on RoadStar/Roadside Plus rentals providing the total cost of the rental does not exceed

  • the daily limit, and
  • overall coverage limit, taxes and mileage included.

Insurance

ICBC does not normally reimburse the customer if additional insurance coverage was purchased on a rental vehicle.
Exception: For a non-responsible customer, the cost of additional insurance purchased is paid when existing coverage such as Temporary Substitute Motor Vehicle (TSMV) or other optional coverage are not transferable to the rental vehicle. The insurance costs are paid under the third party liability (TPL) of a responsible ICBC insured motorist vehicle.
Tip: TSMV coverage excludes commercial vehicles over 5000kg gross vehicle weight (GVW). As the customer must purchase additional insurance when they are renting a vehicle over 5000 kg GVW, ICBC pays for the TSMV's insurance to avoid a downtime claim when the customer is not responsible and thereby mitigate costs.
