Supplier trade qualification policy

Policy on trade qualification for ICBC’s suppliers’ technical positions who perform repairs on customer vehicles.

Policy

The policy applies to the following technical positions:

  • auto body collision technician
  • automotive refinishing technician
  • automotive refinishing prep technician
  • automotive service technician
  • automotive glass technician
  • heavy duty equipment technician
  • recreational vehicle service technician
  • transport trailer technician
  • motorcycle technician, and
  • truck and transport mechanic.
The policy ensures that all repairs:
  • are performed by qualified technicians
  • meets a professional standard, and
  • are in accordance to ICBC’s best practices and requirements.
Note: Trade equivalency (Supervision and Sign Off Authority) is not accepted as a trade qualification. It is strictly allowed only for the supervision of an apprentice, and does not provide certification to perform repairs on ICBC customer vehicles.

Eligibility

The individual must provide a copy of their driver’s licence or photo identification to verify their employment, and must:

  • have a valid and recognized trade qualification acquired within BC or another Canadian province, or
  • be registered into an apprenticeship agreement for the specific trade they perform within the supplier facility.
Note: Individuals, including either a certified journeyperson or someone with equivalent sign off authority, must work for the same employer that the apprentice is sponsored by, but do not have to work on-site at the same location on a full-time basis.
