When this applies

When an employee is exposed to potentially bio-hazardous material, the employee should immediately clean and disinfect the wound. Then follow a strict communication and documentation protocol.

An employee has been directly exposed to a potential biohazard via open skin, including a cut or puncture.

Procedure

  1. Employee
    1. Cleans, bleeds and disinfects the wound.
    2. Notifies their first aid attendant and Occupational Health and Safety.
  2. First aid attendant or designate
    1. Documents the event on the First Aid Record form.
    2. Completes and faxes a WorksafeBC Employer’s Report of Injury or Occupational Disease (Form 7A) to Employee Wellness.

    1. Contacts the Estimating Services Manager to advise on the WorkSafeBC claims reporting requirements.
