Confirm eligibility for Loss of Use due to theft

The claim owner or exposure owner reviews the customer's loss details, insurance policy, personal needs, and other applicable factors when determining if there is eligible Loss of Use (LOU) due to theft.

Prerequisites

The customer has purchased Comprehensive or Specified Perils coverage, and does not have any other LOU coverage available.

When this applies

The claim owner or exposure owner is confirming eligibility for only LOU due to theft provided under Loss of use due to theft, Section 5.13 of the Optional Policy.

Procedure

  1. Determine the customer's vehicle type.
    If the vehicle is a ... Then the customer ...
    • taxi
    • U-drive
    • limousine use vehicle that is rated in vehicle rate class 695, or
    • limousine that is used for hire
    is not eligible for LOU due to theft.
    vehicle other than a
    • taxi
    • U-drive
    • limousine use vehicle that is rated in vehicle rate class 695, or
    • limousine that is used for hire
    may be eligible for LOU due to theft. Proceed to step 2.
  2. Determine if the claim is related to the customer's vehicle being stolen.
    If the loss details indicate or suggest the claim is ... Then the customer ...
    not related to the customer's vehicle being stolen

    may be eligible for LOU coverage.

    related to the customer's vehicle being stolen by a person who
    • resides with the customer or
    • is an employee of the customer
    related to the customer's vehicle being stolen by a person who is not a person who
    • resides with the customer or
    • is an employee of the customer
    may be eligible for LOU due to theft. Proceed to step 3.
  3. Determine if the customer has reported their vehicle stolen to the police.
    If the customer has ... then the customer ...
    not reported their vehicle stolen to the police is not eligible for LOU due to theft.

  4. Inform the customer
    • of the requirements a rental vehicle provider may have, and
    • the rental vehicle provider's requirements may affect their eligibility for a rental vehicle.
    If the rental vehicle provider ... Then ...
    has an age limit, such as the customer must be 21 years old or older

    an additional person may be needed on the rental agreement.

    Note: If there is no additional person that can be added to the rental agreement, the customer may be ineligible for a rental vehicle.
    requires a credit card or cash deposit

    the customer needs to arrange for the deposit.

    Note: If there is no one who can assist with the credit card or cash deposit, then the customer may be ineligible for a rental vehicle.
    requires rental vehicle insurance

    a customer with limited Own Damage coverage may need to buy additional insurance.

    Note: Insurance for the rental vehicle is not reimbursed. If the customer chooses to not get insurance, they may be ineligible for a rental vehicle.
  5. Discuss with the customer
    • that their LOU due to theft can run out before the claim is finalized, and
    • to use their LOU due to theft minimally early in the claim.

    using taxis and public transportation

    expenses incurred above daily or total policy limits are not reimbursed.

    Note: Taxi, public transportation, and rental vehicles are subject to the same daily and total limits.
    requiring LOU coverage for the duration of repairs

    expenses incurred after the claim is completed are not reimbursed.

    Note: LOU due to theft ends when the customer's
    • vehicle is repaired, or
    • claim is settled or a settlement is offered.

Results

If the customer is eligible for LOU due to theft, they may choose to
  • authorize direct billing, or
  • review receipts and invoices for consideration of reimbursement.
Important: With total theft claims, LOU due to theft can be reimbursed, if the customer does not repair their vehicle. When the customer chooses not to repair their vehicle, the claim is considered to be complete.
