Handle and dispose of biohazardous materials
Steps to handle and dispose of biohazardous materials in a vehicle.
When this applies
When biohazardous materials, such as syringes or needles, are found in a vehicle by an ICBC representative.
Procedure

Determine whether a qualified service provider is required to remove the object.
If... Then...
there is evidence of syringes or needles embedded in the vehicle trim or upholstery - use the services of a qualified service provider, and
- proceed no further with this procedure.
Note: These qualified service provider manages the disposal of the bio-hazardous item(s).Note: The invoice should be paid on the claim file, under the existing cause of loss.the object is not embedded go to the next step.
- Don latex gloves and use a tool, such as needle-nose pliers or tongs, to pick the article up.
- Dispose of sharp objects in the sharp container, commonly located in the non-driveable vehicle estimating bay.

Clean the pliers or tongs with a bleach solution and rinse with water.
Note: For a bleach solution use 1 part bleach to 9 parts water.
- Dispose of any items that have been in contact with blood/bodily fluids in a plastic bag.

Tie off the first plastic bag and place it in a second plastic bag.
Important: Keep the second bag open until you are finished with the gloves.

Carefully remove the latex gloves and drop them in the second plastic bag, tie off the bag and label it "Bio-Hazardous Material."
Note: Bio-Hazardous Material labels are available from your first aid attendant.
- Wash your hands with soap and water even if the gloves appear to be intact.

Call Occupational Health and Safety at 604-982-6315, when the sharp container is 3/4 full or bag(s) have been used
Note: The cost of removal is paid by the claims office requesting the service.Result:
Occupational Health and Safety arranges for pick-up.
