Recycled parts requirements

Requirements for a recycled part to be used on an ICBC’s customer vehicle.

Requirements

The table presents the requirements that a recycled part must meet before an estimator will use it to repair for an ICBC claim.

Requirement Details
New aftermarket parts New aftermarket parts must
  • not be provided as recycled parts
  • be identified as new, and
  • be agreed upon between the recycler and the ICBC estimator on its use at the time of the initial parts request.
Clean parts All recycled parts must be appropriately cleaned prior to delivery.
Mechanical parts ICBC’s policy is to
  • replace mechanical parts in consultation with the customer regarding their vehicle repairs, and
  • utilize the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) aftermarket, rebuilt or recycled mechanical replacement parts.
Note: The estimator must consider the cost of recycled parts against the depreciated cost of new or rebuilt parts, and the warranty(s) provided.
Important: Major mechanical assemblies inclusive of engines, transmissions, transfer cases, differentials, turbo chargers, superchargers and related powertrain components are to be supplied with same kilometres or less to the loss vehicle.
Parts quality
  • The quality of parts is accurately represented by the recycled part supplier.
Note: The Automotive Recyclers of America Damage Code (ARA) criteria are referenced in the description of the part condition.
  • The recycled part supplier provides an appropriately agreed upon allowance to the repair facility based on current practices and costs for the repair of pre-existing damage to recycled parts.
  • Disputes concerning the amount of damage on parts exceeding the recycled part supplier’s estimate are to be resolved between the repair facility and the recycled part supplier, prior to the part being installed.
  • Repair facility requests for labour compensation must be reasonable, and be agreed to by the recycled part supplier before the parts are repaired or installed.
Note: The exception is compensation for custom cutting of sheet metal parts might be considered when a part is being returned for reasons beyond the recycled part supplier’s control.
