Summary of the type of evidence which indicates the vehicle damage is consistent or inconsistent with a hit and run claim.
Evidence of consistency
Evidence of consistency with "hit & run" type of damage, includes but is not limited to the following:
Type of damage | Indication |
---|---|
Single directional damage | The cause was the striking vehicle passing the struck vehicle. |
Straight line damage to wheel, tire, and/or hubcap | The struck vehicle was stationary. |
Bumper height damage | The cause was the striking vehicle’s bumper. |
Indications of inconsistency
Indications that damage is not consistent with "hit and run" type of damage include, but are not limited to the following:
Observation | Indication |
---|---|
Presence of rust | The age of the damage is not consistent with the stated date of loss. |
Severe impact-type damage | Impact with a stationary object. |
Wood, cement or other abrasive type residue in the damage area | Impact with a non-vehicle object. |
Damage extending vertically and at the same depth at top and bottom | Collision with a stationary object such as a pole, tree, abutment, or garbage container. |
Non-automotive paint deposits on the damaged area | Collision with a stationary object. |
Fresh undercarriage damage, or dirt and debris underneath the vehicle | A off road excursion. |
Indications of rotation on wheels, tires or hubcaps | Customer’s vehicle was moving when damaged. |
Evidence of numerous scratches caused by branches | Customer’s vehicle was moving when damaged. |
